ABOUT ME
I was offered a graduate assistantship at Sequoya National Research Center during the final semester of my undergraduate studies. I had not thought about graduate school until that moment so I was unprepared to have to make a decision so quickly and unsure of what direction to take. I began the Interdisciplinary MA. program in the fall of 2017. As part of my interdisciplinary studies, I had enrolled in Document Design and Multimedia Writing Instruction. I was so impressed by my instructors Dr. Londie Martin and Dr. Michael Greer, that the following spring, I applied for and was accepted into the Professional and Technical Writing Program and Online Writing Certification Program. As the parent of a young child with special needs, the potential flexibility offered by a career in distance instruction made the Online Writing Instruction Certification Program very appealing.

Initially, as a tentative thesis project, I was working towards developing a chatbot to pair with the online curriculum that would be my final project in my O.W.I. certification practicum. When I was being advised last fall, I was told that 6 of my remaining 9 hours in the spring would be devoted to preparing and presenting my thesis project. This schedule meant that I was going to graduate without knowing how to write a grant which was one of my main goals when entering the program. I decided that I would be better prepared upon graduation for an uncertain job market with more professional and business writing experience so I switched to the portfolio option with the addition of Grant Writing, Writing for Business and Government, and Writing Software Documentation to my transcript. These additional hours allowed me to practice and improve my professional writing skills in the very likely event that decent positions in education were unavailable. I believe that I have substantially improved both my writing and editing skills and expanded my career options with this decision to shift to the portfolio option and stay in the program for an extra semester.
